Cervicogenic Headache

Symptoms

Chiropractors deal primarily with what are known as cervicogenic headaches, where the primary cause of the headache arises from the neck.
Cervicogenic headache can range from mild to severe in its intensity.  Its location and quality varies.  You may feel:
  • tension in your head, neck and shoulders
  • or a vice-like grip around your head
  • pressure behind the eyes, across the forehead, at the back, or over the top of your head.
This, in turn, can affect your concentration, energy levels and activities of daily life.

Causes

The source of the headache could be irritation in the top three nerves in the neck, referred pain from the muscles in the neck, or stiffness in the joints of the neck. You are particularly susceptible if you have a job where you have to hold your head in a particular position for a prolonged period (eg. hair stylist, carpenter, dentist), or if you carry your head out in front of your body (what we call ‘anterior head carriage’).  This will put excessive postural strain on your neck and upper back.
